</p><p><i>As mentioned in the previous blog, we catch sharks in this survey. During the beam trawl survey their size is manageable. in the herring survey (<a href="http://herringsurvey.blogspot.com/">Herring Acoustic Survey (herringsurvey.blogspot.com</a>, no blog in 2023) we regularly catch sharks that are to big to be lifted by one or even two persons. Often, those sharks are hoisted by their tail and put overboard. As that method damages the shark, scientists together with the crew developed a tool for a more animal-friendly release, and since this year we are able to release large sharks by using a 'shark-stretcher' (design A. Scheepmaker). </i></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dwarE_QbphELiw9srcgb1JAgdxg7ler7Mfvqcf-NP7DJJHolAqR4JNZEwoAZw7QFhxl6ACmNHX5t2Gq11fnfQ' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">het overboord hijsen van de haai // <i>hoisting a shark to the water (credits S. Doornhaaien zijn levendbarend en leggen dus geen eieren maar de jongen ontwikkelen zich in de buik van de moederhaai. </p><p><i>This week we had some mixed feelings about one of the catches. We caught approx. 30 spurdogs in each of the nets, mostly females. Spurdog is viviparous, so does not lay eggs. Zo zag dat er uit.<p></p><p><i>Of course, we like to know that there is spurdog in the North Sea, and that it is able to reproduce. </p><p><i>The daily routine is simple: at 7.15 a CTD measurement (temperature and salinity of the sea water at different depths), followed by fishing, catch sorting, measuring, counting, weighing, and otolith collection. Five times a day. In between: eating, at 12.30 and 18.00. End of work at about 20.30 or 21.00. The survey serves multiple purposes: first of all, collect fisheries-independent information on a number of flatfish species (such as Plaice), to be used in stock assessment together with fisheries-dependent information. Next to that, we collect information on the species composition at the seaflooe ('ecosystem').</i></p><p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgZtN_r2-JayLV946evVBcUkQeae7wfVzqULnA60bkmAW4k5pmqpAFxomoejY5xJGQihyIKG1-AcYx1qyrPYGfmG-T__5ZMvTiiACRD4PGPcLGumtm4iQfCyYitMy1fSykwjWkYH41pP6H355d__3WwsMpLnFiAc3UbZGq0-vQctqRPoQzzaSf8sNlEiUw" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgZtN_r2-JayLV946evVBcUkQeae7wfVzqULnA60bkmAW4k5pmqpAFxomoejY5xJGQihyIKG1-AcYx1qyrPYGfmG-T__5ZMvTiiACRD4PGPcLGumtm4iQfCyYitMy1fSykwjWkYH41pP6H355d__3WwsMpLnFiAc3UbZGq0-vQctqRPoQzzaSf8sNlEiUw=w300-h400" width="300" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Schol, één van de doelsoorten // <i>Plaice, one of the target species</i></td></tr></tbody></table><br /></p><p>Binnen die routine zit nog meer routine: iedereen heeft een eigen taak nadat de vangst op de lopende band is gesorteerd. Within the daily routine there is a more detailed one: we all have our specific task after the first catch sorting. <a href="https://beamtrawlsurvey.blogspot.com/2022/08/alles-lijkt-goed-en-danall-seems-nice.html">Beam Trawl Survey: Alles lijkt goed, en dan...//All seems nice, and then....</a>). </p><p><i>Despite the severe delay at the survey start, the first part of it could be finished within the planned timeframe. Towards the end of the survey, we were a bit on our guard for the bryozoans, based on our experiences in 2022 and 2021 (see e.g. <a href="https://beamtrawlsurvey.blogspot.com/2022/08/alles-lijkt-goed-en-danall-seems-nice.html">Beam Trawl Survey: Alles lijkt goed, en dan...//All seems nice, and then....</a>). We always have a microscope on board to have a closer look at details in order to identify species properly. The most extreme colour variety reported on, is probably a cobalt blue one, caught in 1974 by a Dutch fisherman (<a href="https://repository.naturalis.nl/pub/317209">Naturalis Institutional Repository: Een afwijkende, kobalt-blauwe, kleurverscheidenheid van het porceleinkrabbetje, Pisidia longicornis (Linnaeus, 1767), uit de Zuidelijke Noordzee (Crustacea Decapoda, Anomura)</a> --in Dutch).</i></div><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiGbHo7Db1PliV-piegqumsaOq5AhINYBVsJVZxN5wT61Fi3se8gB5Q69lAFLwXTFGLfLdEs6lcrO3ZE94e-vsnfoO-sJUfcfXJ91K3dvTOAxHdvcigXP3Hdw9_C2QlyTJEp8WJx05wohSGF__vh0UrnV3pZ1wiymI7dODoB0lcSpC7vOBtUMU2enYSzYA" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="" data-original-height="2591" data-original-width="2552" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiGbHo7Db1PliV-piegqumsaOq5AhINYBVsJVZxN5wT61Fi3se8gB5Q69lAFLwXTFGLfLdEs6lcrO3ZE94e-vsnfoO-sJUfcfXJ91K3dvTOAxHdvcigXP3Hdw9_C2QlyTJEp8WJx05wohSGF__vh0UrnV3pZ1wiymI7dODoB0lcSpC7vOBtUMU2enYSzYA=w393-h400" width="393" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i>Pisidia longicornis </i><i>(credits: M. Tijd voor nieuwe plannen dus. </p><p><i>As we weren't able to fish the stations we planned to do last week, we had to modify the sampling grid to an achievable amount of work for the remainder of the survey. Two weeks left, so we decided to continue working next weekend instead of having a cruise break, to gain some time. But still then, one won't gain a full sampling week by that, so reduction of the number of stations is also needed. </i></p><p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjh-DPTgitZSLV4vB8GbDJs0GBFXprs8WFMRKlHfnidxpDx1LrHgJNtv60i1zvNbfA1Oe947ZnPGdTT8GXwfc3QvKd-_gdn_ezdvKpJTHqPrU0u9ixjl2itLTOXnYD-dDvCOyjNoUE7HvDqLDxGH7bl6HboamcUEwP05ys5cOlfyztOkVCulBq4pukbnO8/s2475/bts2023_plan_zs_feb23_inclsnijgebieden.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2475" data-original-width="2475" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjh-DPTgitZSLV4vB8GbDJs0GBFXprs8WFMRKlHfnidxpDx1LrHgJNtv60i1zvNbfA1Oe947ZnPGdTT8GXwfc3QvKd-_gdn_ezdvKpJTHqPrU0u9ixjl2itLTOXnYD-dDvCOyjNoUE7HvDqLDxGH7bl6HboamcUEwP05ys5cOlfyztOkVCulBq4pukbnO8/w400-h400/bts2023_plan_zs_feb23_inclsnijgebieden.png" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Het oorspronkelijke programma // <i>The original sampling grid</i><br /><span style="color: #ffa400;">oranje</span>=gebieden waarbinnen leeftijdsgegevens worden verzameld; vierkantjes=ICES kwadrant; getal in het vierkantje=aantal vislocaties; kleur van het getal=aantal minuten vissen (zwart=30, <span style="color: red;">rood</span>=15, <span style="color: #2b00fe;">blauw</span>=opletten tijdens vissen en evt. korter dan 30 minuten) // <i><span style="color: #ffa400;">orange</span>=otolith collection areas; squares=ICES rectangle; number in square=number of fishing stations; colour=haul duration (black=30 mins, <span style="color: red;">red</span>=15 mins, <span style="color: #2b00fe;">blue</span>=if needed reduced duration)</i></td></tr></tbody></table>Gelukkig kennen we de prioriteit in dit soort gevallen: de ruimtelijke dekking van de survey moet in stand blijven. </p><p><i>Luckily, there is a sort of priority that we can use when we face reduction of the available survey time due to unforeseen circumstances. We still would like to collect information for the complete survey area. As the first three weeks of the survey work with quite a dense station grid compared to the last four weeks, stations could be removed without affecting the spatial coverage. Of course, the denser the grid, the better the estimate, but in this case we had to chose and reduced the number of fishing stations per ICES rectangle. </i></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJEEaAesy_WJ8fifHP5d157TAxRnICYH2MAOA20s70rvHWqIDoHSJfIHg6Qrbe3A-loriWbNaFAzG2vTD2ps8RxtyO-j9UAzhYAdCKJ2k-EugrvOR7x3ELuQYT_Q1--uNm2jdOkYegH7FVaaCI0r6uKDOStXDBXBSkXnHQU7nupO6vvVtG4V1zIdTJVUU/s7132/bts2023_plan_zs_aug23_updatewk3233_inclsnijgeb.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="7115" data-original-width="7132" height="399" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJEEaAesy_WJ8fifHP5d157TAxRnICYH2MAOA20s70rvHWqIDoHSJfIHg6Qrbe3A-loriWbNaFAzG2vTD2ps8RxtyO-j9UAzhYAdCKJ2k-EugrvOR7x3ELuQYT_Q1--uNm2jdOkYegH7FVaaCI0r6uKDOStXDBXBSkXnHQU7nupO6vvVtG4V1zIdTJVUU/w400-h399/bts2023_plan_zs_aug23_updatewk3233_inclsnijgeb.png" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Het aangepaste programma // <i>the amended survey programme</i></td></tr></tbody></table><p></p><p>We hebben de voornaamste betrokkenen meteen geïnformeerd over deze wijziging. </p><p><i>We were about to weigh the fish fish when we had a full black-out on the vessel. So far, so good. but then, the system used for hauling the anchor back in, broke down. We had the choice between either 'stay anchored forever', or, as soon as the engine was running again, make sure that we freed ourselves. With effort and dedication of the crew we managed to get everything back on board. </p><p><i>In the fish identification guide it looks as if all individuals from a species should look identical. We hebben er vorig jaar ook eentje zuidelijker in de Noordzee gevangen (<a href="http://beamtrawlsurvey.blogspot.com/2021/08/blauwe-wijting-en-harig-mosdiertje-blue.html">Beam Trawl Survey: Blauwe wijting en harig mosdiertje // Blue whiting and Electra pilosa</a>).</p><p><i>Yesterday, out last haul was at the deepest survey station: approx. 145 m deep. As a consequence, we also caught some species that prefer deeper water. As the deepest areas of the North Sea are situated in its northern part, it is not easy to distinguish 'northerly species' from 'species that prefer deeper water'. Blue whiting for example is an Atlantic species (deeper water preference) and not necessarily 'northerly species', as its distribution area in the spawning period is mainly west of Ireland (see <a href="http://bluewhitingsurvey.blogspot.com/2022/04/voorlopig-verspreidingskaartjes-blauwe.html">http://bluewhitingsurvey.blogspot.com/2022/04/voorlopig-verspreidingskaartjes-blauwe.html</a>). </p><p><i>Today, we're sampling in the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moray_Firth">Moray Firth</a>, and area on the Scottish eastcoast. We tend to have an annual 'special survey catch' in that area. This morning, we caught a common skate (which is not common at all) of less than 30 cm. We put it in seawater to bridge the time between sorting the catch and measuring the fish. Common skates can grow up to more than 2.5 meter, but that size is rarely caught. Catching a small common skate at least means that the species is reproducing.</i></p><p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjltTA21d2RriI13wd-CP0agYlP6ZZ9kNa5bwcbS7OHq4gahAKk0q28E0HHsen2resnM-N3jdDRLlEwW2MIPONfocXuQiXARaJvp-ibonGSvDMm7zxfqgGXg1-xWxVpuEQjwpg4T__M_yLxpy3i38lvgnpdm-5bJFGWhXPOyC5fAx-LwHAh7Jgc-txN" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="" data-original-height="4624" data-original-width="3468" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjltTA21d2RriI13wd-CP0agYlP6ZZ9kNa5bwcbS7OHq4gahAKk0q28E0HHsen2resnM-N3jdDRLlEwW2MIPONfocXuQiXARaJvp-ibonGSvDMm7zxfqgGXg1-xWxVpuEQjwpg4T__M_yLxpy3i38lvgnpdm-5bJFGWhXPOyC5fAx-LwHAh7Jgc-txN=w300-h400" width="300" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Vleet // <i>Common skate</i></td></tr></tbody></table><br />Na de lunch visten we op het derde station van de dag en plotseling was er grote opwinding. Tussendoor maakten we nog snel even een foto als bewijsmateriaal.</p><p><i>After lunch, we hauled in the catch of the third tow, and suddenly there was a lot of excitement. We caught a large common skate (1.63 m). It took some effort to get it measured (we needed to put two measuring boards next to each other), weighed (it was too heavy for the weight), and, most importantly, to get it safely back into the sea. But, we managed. And we made a quick selfie as proof of the catch.</i> <br /><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhHAe05gSRJqlkVAseOBH5BgPtkpfUSZvK_wsltWQSsoIYUamXiJfNLNXyoquh_gZWgioc76OLzsacDIx0ZORldvF__-z7y9IPqMhOUNJYqbgKAsQaUghk9eOCRg7Cs50vLn1sHdL3QWI2mhBqPzm6fl2pZOpNEuhvALIadaolXJdqUwiPa6zKGP9c8" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="" data-original-height="1538" data-original-width="2048" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhHAe05gSRJqlkVAseOBH5BgPtkpfUSZvK_wsltWQSsoIYUamXiJfNLNXyoquh_gZWgioc76OLzsacDIx0ZORldvF__-z7y9IPqMhOUNJYqbgKAsQaUghk9eOCRg7Cs50vLn1sHdL3QWI2mhBqPzm6fl2pZOpNEuhvALIadaolXJdqUwiPa6zKGP9c8=w400-h300" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">vlnr / <i>left to right</i>: Ingeborg, Hans, Ton, Yoeri, Sophie, Sieto<br />in het midden de vleet // <i>common skate in the centre</i></td></tr></tbody></table><br /><br /></p>Beam Trawl Surveyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17792365819772439392noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4668451491453168090.post-17561920274204978492022-08-26T06:30:00.001-07:002022-08-26T06:30:00.191-07:00Ben je wel wat je naam is? // Does your name explain who you are?<p></p>Beesten moeten een naam hebben. That is practical when monitoring sea life. All animals (and plants) have a scientific name, based on their position in the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taxonomy_(biology)">taxonomic system</a>. Many species also go by a common name (in Dutch even more than in English), but sometimes the marine version is not at all what the terrestrial version would be. For example: a 'sea-mouse' is not a mouse, it is a worm. A 'sea horse' is not a horse, but a fish. The common cuttlefish is not a fish but a mollusc (in Dutch, the common cuttlefish is called "sea cat" -it's no cat either).</i><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjYYj3aYSnljsEL6MMHQjtoDo7FwTsB8DP6DNduOLwS8BJknzWrJ_2pSibeBLh4l1Sv66-CpdNSPruv-EC1-QjgFS86jz7pYr2imZ7GHyOwPE1DKmNHMzjSRMh6EkNXNJFXP-8Kj2mD6UqdtPKx5cF3B9P0jsL0tkmCjiqp297INh9OJGPGtHzYOaui" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="" data-original-height="1932" data-original-width="2576" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjYYj3aYSnljsEL6MMHQjtoDo7FwTsB8DP6DNduOLwS8BJknzWrJ_2pSibeBLh4l1Sv66-CpdNSPruv-EC1-QjgFS86jz7pYr2imZ7GHyOwPE1DKmNHMzjSRMh6EkNXNJFXP-8Kj2mD6UqdtPKx5cF3B9P0jsL0tkmCjiqp297INh9OJGPGtHzYOaui=w400-h300" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">zeekat // <i>common cuttlefish</i></td></tr></tbody></table></div><br /><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj2pJtZn9PYDzS2xGovqn1rHIi67yulfjLMk2xzv1g16DpmK4XGhzqqYRr0oUULiMqQsmx43p13pQmCRkZ6-kiAK9DBAvHDo6uenvwqeRnmYDDQqM5DsowkJHmtoKkVwJienY4vofFgQAmNuI40lY0CPk0FcUXyUGDS_l3sgeB3dePiPSRkAnM2m5HK" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="" data-original-height="3468" data-original-width="4624" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj2pJtZn9PYDzS2xGovqn1rHIi67yulfjLMk2xzv1g16DpmK4XGhzqqYRr0oUULiMqQsmx43p13pQmCRkZ6-kiAK9DBAvHDo6uenvwqeRnmYDDQqM5DsowkJHmtoKkVwJienY4vofFgQAmNuI40lY0CPk0FcUXyUGDS_l3sgeB3dePiPSRkAnM2m5HK" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">fluwelen zeemuis // <i>sea mouse</i></td></tr></tbody></table><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhibGyoWTN3N1KFDlx9RYfEmf4It1jyqq4_kAWWVKTydFLQToc5f4dAtbHl8lYJVS9E_I6ykb1FXqgmhPMKMtvVt8f6zRALg-d75wckZLfawt979dDtZPCwNlio6z8f3AFYbwforp2bT9sWvfsL15QAU7rJ_RWmQ0jhc6bRE9p9Exb5RCWYCM8BpmKO" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="" data-original-height="3019" data-original-width="1798" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhibGyoWTN3N1KFDlx9RYfEmf4It1jyqq4_kAWWVKTydFLQToc5f4dAtbHl8lYJVS9E_I6ykb1FXqgmhPMKMtvVt8f6zRALg-d75wckZLfawt979dDtZPCwNlio6z8f3AFYbwforp2bT9sWvfsL15QAU7rJ_RWmQ0jhc6bRE9p9Exb5RCWYCM8BpmKO=w239-h400" width="239" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">kortsnuitzeepaardje //<i> short-snouted seahorse</i></td></tr></tbody></table><br /><p></p><p><br /></p></div>Beam Trawl Surveyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17792365819772439392noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4668451491453168090.post-88361427265173855522022-08-25T00:45:00.002-07:002022-08-26T06:22:46.319-07:00Noordelijker en dieper I // Further north and deeper I<p>Gisteren gingen we de grens van 60 meter diepte over. New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">Yesterday, we crossed the 60 m depth border. The Dutch beam trawl survey is divided in two parts: three weeks in the southeastern North Sea and German bight, followed by four weeks in the central and western North Sea. </b></p><p><i>Over the past three BTS weeks Eleanor Greenway has tagged a total of four blonde and spotted rays for her PhD project with Data Storage Tags (DST). <div><br /></div><div><i>Last Monday, the survey continued, after a weekend in Scheveningen. Only few messages arrived from sea, mostly functional. It is good that all runs smoothly on board, although it makes blog writing more challenging. The weather is good, and till yesterday 47 hauls have been conducted. On full working days 6, bit more often 7 hauls are processed. The first one comes in at 8 in the morning, the last approx. 12 hours later. Waarom we dat willen weten staat hier helder beschreven, onder punt 1: <a href="https://vistikhetmaar.nl/dossiers/gegevens-vanuit-het-onderzoek/">Gegevens vanuit het onderzoek - Vistikhetmaar</a></p><p><i>Based on the previous blogs, one may think that the survey is on its way to fail. That is not true, many things worked well. First of all: data collection for age reading. Age information is crucial for the stock assessment models, together with the length and weight information. Age is identified by looking at ring structures in the fish' earbones (otoliths), growing like trees with denser and less dense rings.</i></p><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj0IebJKSY_nqoz1lUQnMe7yHdxN0lV8TpQYfYT_CsbjFbapYs_aT-TVjG1TSYJO4knXhGQei2QXr2-bHAofOkGjEZ8lOHYhTvY-JjW8QXKQc1V3zP1pB8O9Ygjb0yvaTNKjmAWn5VGA55q2HUIP6v1WpqwFD7kFskpEHQRkv5L41ppJl0iiG-rOZlZ" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="" data-original-height="181" data-original-width="487" height="149" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj0IebJKSY_nqoz1lUQnMe7yHdxN0lV8TpQYfYT_CsbjFbapYs_aT-TVjG1TSYJO4knXhGQei2QXr2-bHAofOkGjEZ8lOHYhTvY-JjW8QXKQc1V3zP1pB8O9Ygjb0yvaTNKjmAWn5VGA55q2HUIP6v1WpqwFD7kFskpEHQRkv5L41ppJl0iiG-rOZlZ=w400-h149" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Aantal otolieten verzameld in de eerste surveyweek //<br /><i>Number of otoliths collected in the first survey week<br /><br /></i></td></tr></tbody></table><p><i><br /></i></p><p><i><br /></i></p><p><i><br /></i></p><p><i><br /></i></p><p><i><br /></i></p><p><i> </i></p><p>De otolieten worden aan boord uit de kop van de vis gehaald en in een envelopje gestopt ('otolietzakje'). <div><br /></div><div><i>Last Friday Tridens returned to Scheveningen. 23 hauls have been conducted: 19 valid, 4 invalid. There is still one rectangle between 3 and 4 degrees east unfished. Last week, a 5 minute trial tow has been conducted, resulting in an enormous amount of Bryozoa. As it is tiring to have many troublesome catches on one day, it was decided to cover this rectangle in the next two weeks, and continue fishing last week on other locations.</i><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh6V8gSIKmckPqqvz0RZpje0ZebNPJ2Pi0-jNk1LcCpMsFFsA5jB2TGn4AlPEkYBkbjg0j6knmbr1Jt4yV55P2hv5yvNs7AaZHqz8Vq1FKSbuC_eK2jNFzOYjVLaIj8C_N8_v-BuxiGHMcyKR3l7md9iAiG22IQvN9oZV-PAsPEtDnBYM0N-2USjIB8" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="800" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh6V8gSIKmckPqqvz0RZpje0ZebNPJ2Pi0-jNk1LcCpMsFFsA5jB2TGn4AlPEkYBkbjg0j6knmbr1Jt4yV55P2hv5yvNs7AaZHqz8Vq1FKSbuC_eK2jNFzOYjVLaIj8C_N8_v-BuxiGHMcyKR3l7md9iAiG22IQvN9oZV-PAsPEtDnBYM0N-2USjIB8=w400-h400" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Visposities BTS week 31 2022, *=ongeldig, stip=geldig // <br /><i>Fishing positions BTS week 31, *=invalid, dot=valid</i></td></tr></tbody></table><br />Twee van de ongeldig verklaarde trekken waren gedomineerd door mosdiertjes (die tussen 3 en 4 graden oosterlengte, zie eerdere blog), de andere twee (tussen 4 en 5 graden oosterlengte) door 'koeteieren', ook wel hartegels (<i>Echinocardium </i>sp.) genoemd, of, minder eerbiedig, zandballen. Pas dan kan de oude tijdserie worden afgesloten en alleen in de nieuwe opzet worden gemonsterd.</p><p><i>From experimental research with different original objectives than to prevent Bryozoa from being caught, new options for the fisheries arise, see <a href="https://www.visserijnieuws.nl/nieuws/algemeen/39357/visvangst-in-een-zak-water">Visvangst in een zak water - Nieuws voor de visserijsector in Nederland en België (visserijnieuws.nl)</a> (in Dutch). For a survey change of fishing gear is a time demanding process, as surveys have been set up to produce timeseries. In case of a gear change, at least five years of parallel sampling should take place in order to understand how data from the original setup relate to the data from the new setup. As you can see, the catch is really large and dominated by many Bryozoa. It is impossible to collect fish (especially smaller individuals) from the bunch of stuff in a representative manner. The data we collect are fisheries independent data, of which the timeseries are used in the fish stock assessment models. It is important to collect data from the fisheries as well as from fisheries independent sources, as fishers go where the fish is (and preferably in high densities, as they have to earn a living), but a full overview of the amount of fish of a certain species in its distribution area should also include the areas where species are less abundant or even absent.</i></p><p>We doen dit onderzoek niet alleen: later deze maand voeren ook Duitsland en België deze survey in de Noordzee uit. It may be superstitious, but one should never say that the last haul is on. But of course someone mentioned the word during the last haul, so we stopped fishing after 25 minutes (instead of the planned 30). We were relieved to see a relative small catch with some species we hadn't caught yet in the past weeks. Below some pictures of intriguing or beautiful fish species. We're happy to finish the survey one day sooner than planned, without any serious damage or delays. <div><br /></div><div><i>To maintain the quality of the work, we use a detailed manual. It is at all times crucial to also stay alert during the survey if all materials are in good shape. One of the important things is the fishing gear. We rely on the crew to check and maintain the net. If there's any damage while at sea, it is mostly repaired within an instant. Repairing nets is craftmanship, so it is crucial to have sufficient people on board who are able to do that quick and good. As we use the gear only once a year, it is important to keep an eye on changes due to shrinkage/stretch during the survey. When we arrived in port last week, the crew checked all elements of the gears to make it work as good as possible.</i></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wQgPr8EqIaw/YTi5homwnrI/AAAAAAAABMQ/gHq6c-gZlWMKp_r-0myvknlDB03kqWs3gCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/2021_BTS_IdB_120.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wQgPr8EqIaw/YTi5homwnrI/AAAAAAAABMQ/gHq6c-gZlWMKp_r-0myvknlDB03kqWs3gCLcBGAsYHQ/w300-h400/2021_BTS_IdB_120.jpg" width="300" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Gijs en Arnoud controleren het vistuig // Gijs and Arnoud check the gear</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /></div>Beam Trawl Surveyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17792365819772439392noreply@blogger.com0
