BTS 2020-voorbereiding I//preparation I

De boomkorsurvey van 2020 is deze week begonnen. Op maandagochtend vertrok de Tridens vanuit Scheveningen. Voordat we echter naar zee kunnen, zijn er nog wat zaken die gedaan moeten worden. Twee weken geleden zorgde de bemanning van de Tridens ervoor dat de boomkortuigen en netten aan boord en klaar voor gebruik waren. Meindert de Boer kwam vanuit de visserij kijken hoe het er uit zag en vanuit Wageningen Marine Research (WMR) keken Thomas Pasterkamp en Ingeborg de Boois mee. 

The annual Dutch beam trawl survey has started this week. Last Monday, RV Tridens left Scheveningen for the first survey week. Before we could go to sea, a number of things had to be arranged. First of all: the gears. Two weeks ago, the Tridens crew prepared the ship for the survey by installing the gears. A representative from the fishing industry, as well as two people from the research institute Wageningen Marie research (WMR) observed the activities.

Het vistuig is een cruciaal onderdeel van de survey, want we vergelijken de vangsten over de jaren heen. We gaan er daarbij van uit dat het vistuig een gelijke efficiëntie heeft. Het is belangrijk dat aan boord voldoende expertise is om daar zorg voor te dragen. Daarnaast zijn we blij met onze intussen meer dan 10-jarige samenwerking tussen de Rijksrederij (scheepseigenaar incl. de vistuigen), WMR (onderzoeksinstituut verantwoordelijk voor de survey) en Rederij de Boer (visserijbedrijf) voor wat betreft de controle en het onderhoud van de netten. Deze worden jaarlijks in de schuur bij Rederij de Boer uitgehangen, gecontroleerd en gerepareerd of vervangen waar nodig. Dat gebeurt op basis van de nettekeningen die aangeleverd zijn door WMR, want alle betrokkenen beseffen dat standaardisatie van het net belangrijk is voor een goede interpretatie van de surveyresultaten.

The gear is a crucial part of the survey, as we compare the survey results over the years. We assume that the catch efficiency for the survey remains constant over time. It it important that the ship's crew is experienced to make sure we can rely on that. On top of that, we're happy with our more than 10 years collaborative net checking and maintenance effort. Rijksrederij (ship's owner including the gears), WMR (institute responsible for the survey), and Rederij de Boer (fishing industry) feel mutual responsible for the quality of the survey nets, and that is why the nets are being checked, maintained and repaired if necessary in the net repair shed of Rederij de Boer based on the net drawings supplied by WMR. All parties do fully understand the relevance of standardisation and good quality of the nets, to ensure the survey results are as reliable as possible.
