Barnacles! Zeepokken!

One thing I learned very quickly as a sea-going scientist is that nothing ever goes to plan. And thus we found ourselves heading back into harbour on Tuesday morning having barely been 500m from the coast.

Er is één ding dat ik heel snel lerde over werken op zee: niets gaat volgens de oorspronkelijke planning. In dit geval betekende dat nadat we maandagnacht op ongeveer 500m  van de kust hadden doorgebracht, we op dinsdagochtend weer naar de haven van Scheveningen vertrokken.


The problem? / Het probleem?

Fouling on the water inlet for the engine cooling system. This means a thick layer of barnacles growing on the water inlet which reduced the water inflow to such an extent that the cooling system could not get enough water.

 

Aangroei in de waterinlaat van het koelwatersysteem. Dat betekende dat er een dikke laag zeepokken in de waterinlaat was gegroeid gedurende de laatste weken waardoor er niet voldoende water kon worden aangezogen om de motor te koelen.

The solution? / De oplossing?

Call in the dive team who would use a high pressure hose to clean the inlet.

Luckily the divers were able to resolve the problem of the water inlet as well as clean the bow and stern thrusters which were also encrusted with barnacles.  At 5pm we again waved goodbye to Scheveningen hoping to now finally be on our way.

 

Gelukkig waren de duikers in staat om de waterinlaat schoon te spuiten. Er bleken door de warme zomer ook veel zeepokken op de boeg- en hekschroef te zijn gegroeid. Om vijf uur ’s middags vertrokken we weer uit Scheveningen, vol goede moed dat we nu echt aan de survey konden beginnen.
