August 19th 2013: A slow start....
Mondays plan was simple. Leave the harbour (always a good
start to a survey) and complete a first haul. Steam in a north-easterly
direction over night to continue sampling in the German Bight Tuesday morning. Unfortunately
a string of technical problems prevented us leaving Scheveningen harbour until
later in the evening and that was not the last of our troubles. Once outside the harbour another technical problem was detected
meaning we had to anchor with land still only 500m away.
Ons plan van maandag was simpel. Uitvaren (altijd een goed begin van een
survey) en een eerste proeftrek doen. We wilden dan graag ’s nachts
noordoostelijk stomen over nacht om dinsdag ochtend in de Duitse bocht te gaan
vissen. Helaas zat het ons niet mee met technische problemen en we konden pas ‘s
avonds uitvaren. We kwamen we niet verder dan net buiten de haven omdat er een
nieuw probleem was gevonden. We moesten dus nog even voor anker.

With the engineers busy trying to sort out our technical
issues in the engine room below, a rescue helicopter used us as a platform for a training excerise in dropping
off and picking up a person at sea. These are tricky manoevres for rescue helicopters and practise is of great importance so that they can use these skills during real emergencies. We hope to encounter none of those on this trip.
Terwijl de machinisten druk bezig waren in de machinekamer kwam een helikopter nog bij ons langs voor een oefening. Ze hebben een man op het achterdek afgezet en weer opgehaald. Indrukwekkend om te zien en ook een heel belangrijke oefening voor hun om uit te voeren zodat dit ook in noodsituaties kan lukken. Wij hopen daar geen gebruik van te maken tijdens deze reis.
