Weather and mysterious litter / Over het weer en mysterieus afval

After a weekend break in Aberdeen we continued our journey at 6am on Monday morning. As we left the harbour and steamed eastwards towards our first station it became clear that the weather was rather unsettled. And well... I’m told the English like talking about the weather... so here some weather news :)

Na een weekeindje pauze in Aberdeen zijn wij om 6uur op Maandag weer vertrokken richting de volgende station. Tijdens onze stoom naar het oosten voelden we al dat het weer wat onrustig was. En tja... ik ben tenslotte Engels en ze zeggen dat Engelse graag over het weer praten. Hier dus wat weer nieuws...

 

 

 

Weather, as you can imagine, is a rather important factor when at sea and a lot of our progress is dependent on the sea state. It’s not just that is uncomfortable to work in rough conditions but the sea state can affect the catches and we have to make sure our hauls stay representative (i.e. the gear is not lifted off the ground due to swell). After a lot of deliberation and checking conflicting weather reports and discussions with the captain we decided again to scrap plans of fishing in the German Bight this week due to expected strong south-westerly winds. You can see the weather developments on the maps below. South-westerly winds are not ideal for the German Bight as the swell will have had too much area to build up, causing high waves in the area. So in the end we decided to stay safe and stick to the UK coast. So far this plan has worked out ok.

Het weer, zoals je je kan voorstellen, is een behoorlijk belangrijke factor op zee en ons werktempo hangt af van de omstandigheden op zee. Het is niet alleen oncomfortabel (wat een understatement!) om te werken op een ruige zee, de omstandigheden kunnen invloed hebben op de vangsten en we moeten ervoor zorgen dat die altijd representatief blijven (Het vistuig kan bijvoorbeeld van de grond gelift worden door de deining). Na veel getwijfel, controleren van tegenstrijdige weerberichten en overleg met de kapitein hebben we besloten de Duitse Bocht deze week niet te bemonsteren vanwege de verwachtte sterke, zuidwestelijke wind. Op onderstaande figuren kan je de wind voorspellingen zien. Zuidwestelijke wind is niet ideaal voor het bemonsteren in de Duitse bocht, omdat de deining zich goed kan opbouwen op de open zee, wat ervoor zorgt dat er hoge golven zullen ontstaan. Uiteindelijk hebben we besloten om veilig en beschut vlakbij de Engelse kust te blijven. Tot nu toe heeft dit plan goed uitgepakt.

Catches along the UK coast are often characterised by a large diversity in the benthos and that was certainly true for our hauls on tuesday. The diversity of fish on the other hand was reduced and we have seen few plaice in this area. We do seem to have caught a fair number of monkfish (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lophius) this trip. Cool animals (if a little ugly) and very tasty too! We expect to catch less of these now we are further south though. Researcher Karin was especially pleased with the lumpsucker in the catch.

 

De diversiteit in vis is kleiner en we hebben ook maar weinig schol gezien in dit gebied. Opmerkelijk zijn onze goede vangsten van zeeduivel (https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zeeduivel) op deze reis. Toffe dieren (misschien een beetje lelijk) en ze smaken ook nog eens goed! Nu we verder naar het zuiden afzakken verwachten we er wel minder van te vangen. Onderzoekster Karin was blij verrast met de vangst van een snotolf(je).

 

 

 

Besides recording all the fish and benthic species that we catch we also keep a record of the litter for which a separate database is being assembled. The last haul of the day contained rather an interesting finding... At first it looked like building blocks. After some research on the internet we decided the blocks derived from a british company. The question remains whether they are a century old as the inscription suggests?

Naast de vis en benthos data die wij verzamelen houden wij ook bij hoeveel en wat voor soort afval opgvist wordt. De laatste trek van dinsdag had dan ook een best bijzondere afval soort voor ons. Een stapel 'stenen' die gebruikt lijken te zijn als hittebestendige voering van een ketel of oven.

Bonus of long days at sea is witnessing many sunrises and sunsets. And this one looks like a calm night for a good sleep!

Bonus van de lange dagen op zee is dat je met heel veel zonsopgang en zonsondergang wordt beloond. En deze lijkt een rustige nacht en dus een goede slaap te voorspellen!
