The A-team in the spotlight / Het A-team in het zonnetje

Week 4 is our last week of the survey and often a time of reflection on how things went as we begin ticking off stations in a homeward direction. 4 weeks of survey can be a monotonous task but how easily the weeks pass depends very much on the team of people around you... so time to put this A-team in the spotlight!

Week 4 is de laatste week van de survey en we zijn bezig de laatste stations richting huis af te tikken. Vaak een tijd om terug te kijken hoe alles is verlopen. 4 weken survey kan heel eentonig worden maar hoe snel (of langzaam) de weken lijken te gaan is erg afhankelijk van de mensen om je heen. Ik wil hier dus even de tijd nemen om het “A-team” in het zonnetje te zetten!

Our mornings start at 7:15 when we put the first CTD in the water and get the nets set before breakfast. The first fish will be on board just as we finish our morning eggs and bacon, lovingly prepared in the excellent galley we have on board. 

Onze dagen beginnen rond 7:15 als we de eerste CTD in het water laten zakken. De netten  worden voorbereid zodat we aan de bak kunnen tijdens ons ontbijt met gebakken eieren en spek.

    Christian usually works on another vessel but has joined the team for this survey where we can make use of his fishing background.

Christian werkt normaal op een ander schip maar helpt deze survey op de Tridens mee waar we gebruik kunnen maken van zijn visserij achtergrond.

In general it is the crews task to handle all things on deck with the gear, including setting, hauling, checking the gear and repairing any damage, and getting the catch down the hatch to the deck below where IMARES staff take over with sorting the catch and taking the measurements. But the crew are always ready to lend us helping hand with washing down the catch, sorting out fish and making sure our benthos baskets don’t overflow. Especially with large catches or when we are a man down for whatever reason this help is much appreciated and keeps the work ticking along nicely so we can be ready on time for the next haul.

Over het algmeen is het de taak van de bemanning om alles aan dek te regelen met het vistuig. Dat is dus het uitzetten en halen, het controleren van de netten en het repareren van beschadigingen en het storten van de vangsten naar beneden. Hier nemen wij IMARES mensen het eigenlijk over en sorteren en bewerken de vangsten uiteindelijk tot getallen in de computer. Maar de bemanning staat altijd klaar om ook beneden dek mee te helpen met het verwerken van de vangst. Vooral als we grote of lastige trekken hebben zijn wij altijd wel dankbaar om de hulp bij de band zo dat ook wij op tijd klaar zijn voor de volgende trek.

Of course, at the end of the day all the work we do is dependent on the ship that needs to keep running. On a 71m vessel this is not a minor task in itself and requires the professional touch of a team of engineers that spend days in the engine room below deck. We’re happy they do what they do and to our knowledge the vessel keeps running without any difficulties.

Wij zijn natuurlijk wel afhankelijk van het schip dat alles goed draait zo dat aan het eind van de dag ons werk goed volbracht is. Op een 71m lang schip is dit geen lichte taak en vraagt de expertise van een team van werktuigkundigen die hun dagen doorbrengen beneden in de machinekamer. Wij zijn blij dat alles goed draait want het spreekt niet altijd vanzelf.

Of course, not to be forgotten either is the importance of food. Fieldwork does not go together with an empty stomach and the galley is generally in full swing most of the day providing food for the twenty odd people onboard.

Ook niet te vergeten is hoe belangrijk eten is. Tja, veldwerk gaat niet goed op een lege maag en onze koks zijn dagelijks druk om eten op tafel te zetten voor de rond 25 man aan boord.

And finally, having just recovered from a bad bout of the stomach flu, I can honestly say, I have rarely been so well looked after. Deifnitley my A-team right here!

Tenslotte, nu dat ik zelf weer op mn benen sta na een heftige buikgriep kan ik eerlijk zeggen, zo goed verzorgd als hier ben ik zelden geweest... echt A-team hier aan boord!
