First fish and mud / Eerste vis en modder

August 21st

On Wednesday morning at 7:15am sharp we finally found ourselves on our first station just north east of the cleaver bank. An hour later we had completed our first haul and were sorting our first catch: a small catch of mostly plaice, dab, lemon sole, solenette and scaldfish. It felt good to finally be getting stuck into our work and collecting data.

The nets are set just after sunrise
De netten worden gezet.

Then the barnacles returned to haunt us... causing more problems with the engine cooling system. This meant another shut down of the engines was required and the vessel was left drifting. Although this meant we could not fish, we made the most of the ships down time to use the opportunity to test the boxcore. The boxcore is a heavy piece of equipment which is designed to take samples of the sediment whilst keeping the sediment structure intact. One of our piggy-back projects of the trip was to experiment with deploying the boxcore to see how feasible it may be to use the boxcore during the BTS in the future.

Boxcore samples can be used to collect data on infauna (organisms living within the sediment) and geochemical profiles of the sediment (e.g. carbon content, chlorophyll a, pore-ater chemistry, particle size, porosity). We are particularly interested in linking the infauna data to the epifuana and fish data already collected during the BTS for a more complete picture of the ecosystem.

Thanks to some great team work between crew and scientists the boxcore was successfully deployed and is now ready to be put into use whenever an opportunity presents itself. With the engines back on track we continued on our journey and completed 4 more hauls the same day.

Interesting fact of the day: Infauna are responsible for a process called “bioturbation”, which described the way in which these organisms mix the sediment and contribute to the recycling of organic matter. Bioturbation is a key ecosystem process which was first described by Darwin in 1881.

Barnacles! Zeepokken!

August 20th

One thing I learned very quickly as a sea-going scientist is that nothing ever goes to plan. And thus we found ourselves heading back into harbour on Tuesday morning having barely been 500m from the coast.

The problem? / Het probleem?
Fouling on the water inlet for the engine cooling system. This means a thick layer of barnacles growing on the water inlet which reduced the water inflow to such an extent that the cooling system could not get enough water.

Watching the divers progress through a video connection.
Note the barnacles growing and closing off the slits for the water inlet.

The solution? / De oplossing?
Call in the dive team who would use a high pressure hose to clean the inlet.

Diver preparing to dive beneath the vessel.

Luckily the divers were able to resolve the problem of the water inlet as well as clean the bow and stern thrusters which were also encrusted with barnacles.  At 5pm we again waved goodbye to Scheveningen hoping to now finally be on our way.

Interesting fact of the day: What is fouling?
Fouling is a common problem on ships and all sorts of anti-fouling methods have been devised. For more information on what fouling is and how it affects ships follow this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biofouling

RV Tridens II – Beam Trawl Survey (part I) begins.

August 19th 2013: A slow start....

Mondays plan was simple. Leave the harbour (always a good start to a survey) and complete a first haul. Steam in a north-easterly direction over night to continue sampling in the German Bight Tuesday morning. Unfortunately a string of technical problems prevented us leaving Scheveningen harbour until later in the evening and that was not the last of our troubles. Once outside the harbour another technical problem was detected meaning we had to anchor with land still only 500m away.

Uitvaren - Deel 1....

With the engineers busy trying to sort out our technical issues in the engine room below, a rescue helicopter used us as a platform for a training excerise in dropping off and picking up a person at sea. These are tricky manoevres for rescue helicopters and practise is of great importance so that they can use these skills during real emergencies. We hope to encounter none of those on this trip.
