Bad weather delays / Slecht weer

After a successful monday and having reached our 1000th plaice milestone, the weather turned against us on tuesday. We managed one early morning haul but during the time it took us to steam to our next station the wind had picked up rapidly and the swell was growing by the minute. After a discussion with the captain we decided to discontinue fishing until the winds died down again. The problem with fishing with beam trawls in high winds and swell is that the gear can be lifted off the seabed and without knowing how much groundcontact we keep during our 30 minute haul, we cannot be sure that the data we collect is representative. Data analysis from previous surveys has shown winds above a windforce 7 are problematic and we were now measuirng peaks up to force 9. Apart from the problems with fishing, working on a vessel in a force 9 is also plain not pleasant. The weather forecast was for the storm to last about 24 hours so we were hopeful we would be able to continue as normal on wednesday morning.

 

Na een succesvolle maandag en het bereiken van onze 1000^ste schol mijlpaal, keerden de weergoden zich tegen ons op dinsdag. We redden het net om 1 ochtendtrek te doen maar tijdens de stoom naar het volgende station ging het steeds harder waaien en de golfhoogte groeide per minuut. Na overleg met de kapitein hebben we besloten om het vissen te staken tot de wind weer gezakt was. Het probleem met het vissen met de boomkor bij harde wind en golfhoogtes is dat het vistuig van de bodem afkomt. En zonder te weten hoeveel bodemcontact we hebben gedurende de 30 minuten trek, weten we niet zeker of de data die wij verzamelen representatief is. Data-analyse van vorige surveys lieten zien dat bij een windkracht hoger dan 7 Bft problemen gaven en we hebben nu pieken tot Bft 9 gemeten. De weersverwachting voor de storm gaf aan dat het 24 uur zou duren dus onze hoop was groot dat wij woensdagochtend verder konden gaan met vissen.

There is not much to be done in a situation like this apart from make sure everything is tied down firmly, stay patient and try to find some form of entertainment on the rolling vessel. With our good team spirit we managed to get through the afternoon with lots of tea, silly jokes and card games.

Er is niet veel te doen in een sutuatie als deze alleen ervoor te zorgen dat alles goed vast zit, relaxed blijven en kijken wat wij voor ontspanning konden doen op een rollend schip. Gelukkig hebben we een goede teamgeest om de middag en avond door te komen met veel thee, veel lachen en kaartspelletjes.

Ook in je hut moet alles vastgezet worden anders vind je je stoel in de gang...

And thankfully the forecast was right, wednesday morning we woke up to a mere windforce 6 (getting less as the day went on), the swell was down to 2m and fishing could continue. To make up some of the lost time we even managed to squeeze 6 stations into one day! Working form North to South we could see the catches change from the more diverse catches with lots of benthos, to cleaner, less diverse catches with little benthos, lots of dab, smaller (younger) plaice and enough weeverfish to keep us on our toes when sorting out the catch. We also found a lot of edible crabs, a couple of lobsters and some different species of rays.

Gelukkig klopte de weersvoorspelling, woensdagochtend werden we wakker met een veel gunstiger windkracht 6 (die nog minder werd naarmate de dag vorderde), de golfhoogte was minder dan 2 meter en we konden weer vissen! Om tijd in te halen is het ons gelukt om 6 stations te persen in 1 dag! Werkend van Noord naar Zuid konden we zien dat de vangsten veranderden van de meer diverse vangsten met een hoop benthos, naar schonere, minder diverse vangsten met weinig benthos, veel schar, kleinere (jongere) schol en genoeg pietermannen om ons scherp te houden tijdens het uitzoeken van de vangst. Ook hadden we veel Noordzeekrabben, een paar Zeekreefte en een paar verschillende soorten roggen.
