Week 2 - Highlights

Week 2 of the beam trawl survey has been completed and we now have a weekend at home to recover before part 2 begins. Here some of the highlights and progress of week 2:

After a number of technical problems in week 1, week 2 ran very smoothly and we were lucky enough to have fantastic weather all week. This meant we were able to complete 18 more hauls in the northern North Sea and German Bight. We also completed 4 more hauls with the 2m net and took 4 more boxcore samples. We have now caught a total of 54 different species of fish and 124 species of benthos. The completed stations are shown here:

Nadat we in week 1 een aantal technische problemen hadden, verliep week 2 zonder problemen. Dankzij het prachtige weer hebben we goed door kunnen werken. Zo hebben we nog 18 stations kunnen bevissen, waarvan 4 ook met 2m netje en bodemhapper zijn bemonsterd. We hebben intussen 54 soorten vis gevangen en 124 soorten benthos (bodemdieren). In ICES quadrant 41F6 (~56.3N 6.5E) we met the german vessel Solea. The Solea is currently completing the german part of the BTS and we decided to complete a comparative haul in one of the quadrants. The Solea provided us with the the positions of their hauls and we fished along one of their lines (see black ring in figure above). The results of the comparison are still to be worked up.

In kwadrant 41F6 (~56.3N 6.5E) kwamen wij het Duitse onderzoeksschip Solea tegen. De Solea is bezig met het Duitse deel van de boomkorsurvey. We hebben gezamenlijk besloten om in een kwadrant een vergelijkende trek uit te voeren. We hebben posities uitgewisseld en hebben vervolgens op hun lijn een trek uitgevoerd (zie zwarte ring in figuur boven). De resultaten van de vergelijking zullen door de internationale coördinatiegroep voor de boomkorsurveys (WGBEAM, http://www.ices.dk/community/groups/Pages/WGBEAM.aspx) verwerkt worden.


At this stage I feel we should express our gratitude to the weather gods for providing us with exceptionally good weather for the full two weeks of the survey so far. It is not often that we have the possibility to sit out on the foredeck after 9pm in a t-shirt enjoying the sunset followed by stargazing. Long may the calm weather continue.

Bij deze wil ik de weergoden bedanken voor het prachtige weer tijdens de afgelopen twee weken. Het gebeurt niet vaak dat we in t-shirt de zonsondergang en vallende sterren kunnen bewonderen vanaf het voordek.
