Het werk is gedaan // Mission accomplished

Gisteren kwam de Tridens een dag eerder dan oorspronkelijk gepland binnen in Scheveningen. We hebben nergens vertraging opgelopen omdat het weer mooi was en we geen schade hebben opgelopen. De survey is voorbij, het werk is af. Maar is dat wel zo? Nee. De otolieten moeten bewerkt worden om de leeftijden van de vis te kunnen bepalen, de leeftijden van ongeveer 2000 schollen en 750 tongen (Isis en Tridens opgeteld) moeten bepaald worden, de gegevens gecontroleerd en in de database geïmporteerd. Daarna worden op basis van de lengteverdelingen in de vangst en de leeftijdsstructuur de hoeveelheden schol/tong per leeftijdsklasse bepaald. Deze informatie wordt gebruikt in het zogeheten internationale update assessment waarbij tussentijds wordt gekeken of de gegevens uit het assessment dat in mei is uitgevoerd in lijn zijn met de surveygegevens van 2016. Dit alles moet voor 10 oktober klaar zijn. Kortom, er moet nog wel wat gebeuren de komende tijd.

Voor de andere soorten is de druk minder hoog, die gegevens worden volgend voorjaar gebruikt voor de bestandschattingen.

Yesterday RV Tridens arrived back in Schevingen. Due to four weeks of beautiful weather and no other delays we managed to finish the work one day early. The survey is over, the work done. Is it? Actually not. A lot of work still has to happen. Of course, we managed to sample all stations, sorted the catches, measured fis, collected otoliths, entered the information in the computer and brought data and otoliths back home. Now it's up to the people preparing the otoliths, and to the otolith readers to analyse the age of about 2000 plaice  and 750 sole (Isis and Tridens together). The data are going to be quality checked and imported in the database.

Based on the length distribution form the catches and age structure the relative amount of plaice and sole per age group is calculated. This information will be used in the international update assessment for plaice and sole -and that should be ready by 10 October.
For the other species the age determination will happen later this year or in the first quarter of next year as the information is needed in spring 2017.
