De eerste week/The first week

We hebben een succesvolle week achter de rug. We hebben:

• 7233 vissen gemeten
• gehoorsteentjes (otolieten) verzameld van 727 vissen
• 6057 krabben, kreeften, zeesterren en ander bodemleven geteld

In totaal hebben we ruim 5000 kilo aan vangst verwerkt. 

Uiteindelijk hebben we dat teruggebracht tot behapbare proporties:

• twee ordners met prints van de gegevens
• één doos met daarin de otolieten 
• 965 KB aan files met de gegevens van de vislocaties en de vangsten
• 2.5 MB aan gegevens over watertemperatuur en zoutgehalte op iedere vislocatie

De digitale gegevens zijn op een veilige plek opgeslagen, de otolieten zijn afgeleverd op het otolieten-lab. Hier zorgen onze collega's ervoor dat de gehoorsteentjes in hars worden gelegd en  worden doorgezaagd zodat andere collega's de leeftijden van de vissen kunnen bepalen. Dit doen ze aan de hand van het tellen van groeiringen, net zoals je bijvoorbeeld de leeftijd van bomen kunt bepalen.

Voordat je zelfstandig in staat bent om van één vissoort de leeftijden bepalen ben je zomaar twee of drie jaar bezig. Ook daarna is er nog allerlei internationale afstemming om te zorgen dat we de vereiste kwaliteit kunnen leveren.

We had quite a successful first week of sampling. We:

• measured 7233 fishes of 39 species, 
• collected otoliths of 727 individual fishes,
• counted 6057 specimens of 59 macrozoobenthos species.

In total, we processed a bit more than 5000 kilo's of catch.

We narrowed it down to be able to bring it home, so in the end all this live material resulted in:

• 2 sets of prints; one set contains the information of the catch, the other the information on the individual fish information related to the otoliths
• a box full of envelopes with the otoliths
• 965 KB of text files with all the information of the trawls, catches and the individual fishes
• 2.5 MB of files with information on water temperature and salinity, from our CTD

The otoliths were delivered at out otolith lab, where people process the earbones to slides so the age readers can define the age of the fish by counting growth rings. The data are stored at a pre-defined location and will be quality checked and fed into the institute's database when the age information is ready.
