It is Saturday, the second week of the BTS has finished. The weather conditions were good the last few days, so we kept the same working pace as the days before. This week we've completed 29 hauls! So far the hauls only differ per quadrant. Sometimes we see more dab and in other quadrants we see more plaice. The only constant factor are common sea stars, sand sea stars, edible crabs, swimming crabs and sea mouse (loved by one of our colleagues).
On Thursday we sampled 8 hauls and on Friday 6 hauls as it meant less time travelling to the next rectangle. Besides the common BTS tasks (see the blog of August 2018), we also have additional tasks during the survey. From the catch we collect all the litter and we take DNA samples from the Thornback ray, the spotted ray, the blonde ray and the cuckoo ray.
Some of the fish and benthic species in the catch look similar. It is therefore important to stay sharp at all times and double check yourself and each other when sorting the catch and identifying species. We encountered several flatfish species this week: Sole, Flounder, Turbot, Brill, Plaice, Dab, Lemon sole. Three of these (Flounder, Dab and Plaice are similar in shape and coloration. Yet, they possess some unique traits based on which they are easily distinguishable. Sometimes it is even easier to identify species based on the white side, or identify not only by looking at the fish but also touching it. .
As it is Saturday, it is fish day! The crew of the Tridens is preparing fish. We are going to enjoy some nice baked/fried fish after a week of hard work.
