There is always room for improvement. The back-end of the net is protected by 'pluis' (a nice word to improve your Dutch pronunciation): bundled monofilaments. Due to the forces on the net when it is trawled over the seabed, some pluis will detach from the net and end up in sea.

This year, the boatswains proposed to change the net protection from pluis to yak leather -first only on portside, as this is the side we don't directly use for the survey results. When the change in protective material does not influence the catches, and net damage is prevented equally, the leather will be applied to the starboard net as well. The yak leather protection has been tested by the fisheries in an initiative to reduce plastics in the sea, and is in use in the commercial fisheries as well (https://vistikhetmaar.nl/artikelen/vispluisvrij/, only in Dutch).

  1. I recently learnt that the English word for 'pluis' is called 'Dolly-rope' (you won't find that in the dictionary...). Supercool you are trying out more environmentally-friendly alternatives! Keep up the good work, and have a good survey! Nathalie Steins
